Research has proved that the linguistic growth of the teenagers of the current generation is being stagnated, by limiting their daily vocabulary to 800 words when 1000 words are the minimum for daily communication. This might make them unemployable, the culprit being internet and chat rooms.
Over the past few years we have been seeing similar reactions to the evolution of language as it adapts to modern modes of communication .A changing vocabulary is not equal to limited ability to express oneself. The cognitive skills of teenagers have deteriorated in recent times. The cause could lie elsewhere than the adoption of new technology.
A deep concern is expressed over the diminishing language skills of school students. This has been in an increasing degree in societies where children use truncated forms of spellings. It becomes boring to use complete sentences. But chatting online parties understand what each other was trying to say. But the virtual world is not far away from the real. What we do there, how we speak the way we process information influences our day to day vocabulary. This affects our linguistic skills.
The average vocabulary of school children is deteriorating. For an intelligible communication there is a need of 1000 words but what is practiced now is 800 words. This is a serious handicap to students. Most of the words being “Yeah”,”Ya”,”But”,”Wow”!,””Hey”. This is more to butchering of language than simplifying it. Let us be more expressive at the same time maintain our vocabulary using complete sentences and use maximum and correct words.
